Anyone seen Moon yet? It's playing nearby and I thought I might shell out the $7 for a matinee movie.

It's either that or Public Enemies... or both, really.

Here I am, at home on a weekend for the first time in a month... and there's no church tomorrow beacuse it's the parish's weekend at the Diocesan retreat...

I might try the local Quaker meeting, or I might just spend some time outside meditating.

Theatre

Went tonight to see Moonlight and Magnolias[1] with a co-worker and his wife; being put on by the local summer theatre programme at the Univ. I was expecting to enjoy the play, as the description said "acting out scenes from the book" and that seemed funny.

There were hilarious parts, both due to script and the talent of the cast, but there were also some wonderful speeches about what, exactly, writers, directors and producers do. More towards film than theatre, but really nice. Also wonderful way of imparting how incredibly instrumental Jewish Americans (particularly from NY city) were in building Hollywood and the American movie industry (thank you, whichever class that was in college where we read Movie-made America).

It was good. I miss the theatre sometimes, as an actor, as a singer, as a costume technician, even as a stagehand/ASM. But going to see a play is enough, I think. It's like going back to my childhood hometown neighborhood - wonderful, restorative, nostalgic and very good for me, but I don't want to live there anymore. I have new worlds to explore, I just don't want my old friends to think I've forgotten them.

[1] a play about the rewrite of the script for Gone with the Wind - see Curtain Up review for summary.

LoudTwitter has died, and may not be revived. This means my linkspam tweets aren't being shoved here... I'll have to start writing [info]j00j and [info]skreidle style awesome link posts.

Until I can do that, I just have to share: Playing History - a site of links to online history games. I love playing the games at the Colonial Williamsburg and V&A sites, but this is awesome!

College Cost Reduction Act

As of today, the College Cost Reduction Act takes effect. This introduces legislation on income-based repayments. There is also now a deal where if you are in public service (including 501 c 3) for 10 years and have made regular payments for 10 years then your remaining debt is forgiven.

There is a very large mosquito in my living room. Any advice on ways to kill/discourage it without filling an enclosed space with citronella/sprays?

First day of summer

Many many thanks to [info]chargirlgenius and [info]jljonsn for putting me up this weekend - they are excellent hosts. Especially because they provide both cat and toddlers for entertainment!

Went to Novice of the Heart on Saturday. Had fun, even with the rain and humidity. I actually had someone "fight" for me in the pas (not sure he got any fighting in, since he was running the youth tournament. But all the Ladies who were being fought for got to sit in the Ladies' Gallery and were to give a token (nifty cast thing) to the fighter who most impressed you (in whatever way). I'm not normally one for sitting and watching the fighting, but watching with a purpose in a comfortable chair was nicer than I expected.

Had a fabulous morning with my hosts, including a brief trip to the local fishing hole. Took my time driving back (especially on 301 over the Potomac! scary!). Early to bed tonight! I have another week of meetings ahead of me.

Book recommendation.

I am currently reading the second in a series by Lauren Willig and I have to recommend them. They are hist-ro, Napoleonic England (aka regency), but with an interspersed narrative of the present-day researcher who's looking into the family/events. The writing really is hilarious, and clearly the author and I share some interests.

Quotes from the current volume (Masque of the Black Tuplip):

(of the garden the researcher is exploring) "There was no hermit's cave complete with hermit and tortoise, a la Arcadia..."

"When I had gone down to the kitchen that morning, there had been a note propped up against he sugar bowl saying 'Out. Help yourself. C.' One had to admire the economy of language. Hemingway would approve. Dr. Johnson wouldn't."

Art in many forms

[info]silverstah linked to this awesome male german 16th century costuming. The link in that page is supposed to go to his hosen, but instead it takes you to his work as an art student. Some really, really nice stuff.

And, on the costuming front again, he has a series of (slightly washed out) pictures of the process of getting dressed.

bah. I am no longer getting the little hover-over menu to report/block users. Most annoying.

Dur. apparently you can turn it off in "view options"... and it was turned off. Has been turned on, spambot-type-journal reported.
